Vancouver April 2005 - Travelogues #2

I stayed pretty close to the hotel and office this weekend – this head cold I had last week has moved into my chest – helped in part I’m sure by the cold, rainy weather here. Got a lot of work done and ventured out a little. Bought some bus passes and have tried to familiarize myself with the mass transit system here – I’m afraid my original plan of walking to and from office every day may have been a little ambitious…..at least until it warms up. Still, I have walked a LOT anyway. One thing I discovered today is that ONE umbrella (and a fold up small one at that) is not enough for this city. I left it at the office and it started raining on the bus – so the 3 block walk from bus stop to hotel was a wet one. Tomorrow I am going to buy a BIG umbrella (that will make SIX that I own, but four of them are in Dallas).

Saturday morning I took the ferry (another 3 block walk from hotel) to Granville Island. Found my little crepe shop and had a nice breakfast, then did some shopping at the Public Market – (Dallas friends – think combination Eatzis and farmer’s market). Bought some fresh shrimp and crab and cheese and produce. There is a neat little wine shop there – saw some I would like to try – maybe later when I am feeling better.

Went to the casino last night. Lost $40 in 15 minutes - didn’t like the casino at all – very quiet – no action – tight slots, but I still had a $5 match play that the concierge at the hotel had given me. Ordered a cab and then put the match play in another machine while waiting and immediately hit a $700 jackpot. Then I really DID have to leave – that’s my rule – leave when you are ahead. Concierge couldn’t believe it when I showed back up less than an hour after leaving hotel.

Found a neat bookstore about 6 blocks from the hotel and also a blues/jazz club two blocks away. They have live entertainment every night and Albert (aforementioned concierge) gave me a VIP pass so will probably check that out next Friday.

Lots of street musicians – like any big city so have enjoyed that. Generally in the area of my hotel, the people on the street seem a little bit skankier than other cities – lots of body peircings and tattoos – lots of young people, too – but then I am just two blocks off one of the main party streets. (think 6th street in Austin).

Did lose track of time Friday night while in bookstore and it got dark while heading back – won’t do that again – a little scary (but not anything like that time in Memphis).

Well, that’s about it. Haven’t taken many pictures yet, but here are a couple – hope they come across OK – am still trying to learn my new camera.

Y’all have a good week.
