Belgium January 2006 - Either I am better than I thought or he is just dumb January 26, 2006

Now I’ve been trying to use what little French I know whenever I can – just things like good morning, how are you, do you speak English, I do not speak French, I don’t know, etc, etc. I think the hotel staff finds me amusing – I know the words, but I’m sure the accent leaves a lot to be desired. (Though I have nailed the pronunciation of chocolat).

So this morning I go down to breakfast and greet the waitress with “Bonjour, chaud chocolat, si vous plait”. (Good morning, may I have hot chocolate please?”)

After getting my food and sitting down, I notice an American man at the next table eyeing me strangely. I saw him yesterday, too. When he got up to get juice, he nodded to me and asked me if I speak English!!!! I laughed, showed him my English version USA today, and said “Mais oui, je suis une Americain”. (But, of course, I am an American). I guess he understood that, ‘cause he laughed and said “well, I though you were, but you sure confused me speaking French this morning!!!!
