Belgium January 2006 - Bon Appetit

Mon Dieu!!! The food here is WONDERFUL!!!! The French – they know how to cook!!!! I haven’t had much luck anywhere I’ve traveled lately finding restaurants that I liked – but that is definitely NOT the case here. Mais non!!!!! My hotel is 4-star with a restaurant that lives up to that rating. Ah…..the cheese, the bread, the wine, the sauces, the CHOCOLAT!!!!!! They have a breakfast buffet so good that I go to bed early now just so I can hurry up and wake up and get down there. Most of y’all know I won’t eat eggs cooked by anyone by me, my mom, and the cook at Cindy’s deli on Central Expressway. But, these are as good as mine and Cindy’s – but maybe not mom’s. And remember that restaurant I told you about in Oak Park, IL that had the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had??? Well, it is as good if not better here. But, it is served so MUCH more elegantly!!! They bring it to you in a little pot and you pour it in your cup.

And dinner at night is tres elegante!!! The French waiter calls me “mademoiselle” . Tonight I had lemon sole that was to die for and the white almond mousse for dessert nearly did send me to my grave!!! Thank God the fitness center is open 24 hours.

And everything is big portions!!! Even the take-out is great – ordered in a chicken sandwich today and have enough left for lunch tomorrow.

AND ------- waiters in restaurants do not expect or want to be tipped!!!!! In fact, if you try to do so, they are insulted!!!! Of course, everything is quite pricey. The exchange rate for the Euro is about $1.30 – meaning you give them 1.30 and get 1.00 back. And aside from the rate issue, things are just high!!!!! The 20 minute cab ride from the airport was $62 US.
