Georgia October 2006 - The Waffle House and the Little White House

Hey guys. Well, I've had a good week in Georgia. I told ya'll about the rinky dink town of Hapeville where I am working. On Thursday, I wanted to find a Triple A office to pick up some maps for the weekend. Found one just 6.5 miles from the office in a town called Morrow so I headed over there at lunchtime. Well, Morrow is an OK little town - big retail area where I was - a little mall, all the big box stores, all the restaurant chains. But getting there!!!! Oh,boy. It was 6 miles of backwoods and more towns like Hapeville!!! By that evening I was SO ready to get out of Hicksville - so I head into the city to meet Susan for dinner. Now, Atlanta doesn't have a particulary spectacular skyline, but there are a LOT of buildings lit up very beaufifully and it is a very cosmopolitan city - so it was nice just to BE there for a few hours.
Friday after work, I inteneded to go to greater downtown Hapeville (read sarcasm in that remark) for the bluegrass concert I had read about. Got there about 6:15 and found a nice park bench. The bands were setting up - not too many people around and theywere all drinking out of those brown paper bags I saw so much of in Memphis!!! I decided that the prudent thing was just to get myself back to hotel and work.
Saturday, though, was a GREAT day!!! Headed up north of Atlanta to Marietta where Susan lives. We spent the day shopping and having our nails done and just catching up on good friend talk. Susan and I met inDallas in the early 80s at bar. We discovered we were both sitting for the CPA exam and have been friends ever since. Many of you know her from my annual Christmas party - we have been putting that on together for many years - the first time before she moved to Atlanta. Anyway, we had a great day during the day and that night went out to dinner with some friends of hers - other transplanted Dallas accountants. We went to a GREAT piano bar/restaurant- good food and a lot of fun. Sat right at the piano and sang along with the pianist. Such a nice young man!!! And he knew a lot of my favorite music -Sinatra, the Eagles, Rod Stewart. He even knew my favorite song, SCOTCH & SODA, - I very rarely get someone who knows that when I request it. We just hada BLAST!!!!
This morning I headed south to Warm Springs - about 60 miles from Atlanta. What a nice day trip it was!!!Warm Springs is where FDR went for the therapeutic spring water for his polio. He started a rehab center there which is still in operation. His house there iscalled THE LITTLE WHITE HOUSE and is the only home he ever owned. The springs are gone...at least for tourists - water may still be piped in to the rehabcenter - I don't know. I toured the house and the grounds and spent a little time downtown - very similar to Hot Springs, but smaller. I wasn't in the mood for the gift and antique shops so I just got me an ice cream cone and sat in a rocker on the porch of a hotel and engaged in some people watching. BTW, if anybody is interested in a good book about FDR, I recommend NO ORDINARY TIME - a great book about him,his administration, and Eleanor and their strange relationship. Next to Jackson, he is my favorite president - I have probably read most everything written about him and E - and this was particularly good - I read it while I was in Denver.
After that I headed back north - on the backroads instead of the interstate - in search of a covered bridge I had heard about (one of 15 in Georgia). I found it - very picturesque - but it really WAS deep in the woods - a little scary particuarly since my cell had been out of service ever since I got off the interstate. But, still I got out and walked across the bridge and took some pictures.
Headed on back to the hotel after that and now am settling in a for a few hours of work.
Unfortunately, I will not be coming back here as planned nor will I be going to Florida. The hot spot now with the client is Denver, so I am heading back there on the 26th and will probably be there until Thanksgiving. Will be home on Thursday and in Oklahoma Sunday-Tuesday. See everybody then.
