Minnesota August 2006 - I have a saint

Remember me telling you about St. Anthony Falls here in Minneapolis? It’s the only significant falls on the Mississippi. Well, it was named for St. Anthony – PATRON SAINT OF TRAVELERS!!!

I am reading a fascinating history of Minneapolis – focusing on it’s beginnings as a mill town – first lumber and then flour.

The first BASEBALL team they had was called the Minneapolis Millers.

Most of the flour milling moved out of the area during the middle of last century due to the ICC and changes in transporation rates. Apparently a lot of it moved to Buffalo which I believe is where another well-known waterfall is. (ha ha)

Oh – and the Mississippi River begins in Minnesota at Lake Istaca and flows 2200 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. You know, there are riverboat cruises you can take along the Mississippi – I’ve said for years I wanted to do that – now I’m getting pumped up about it again.

You know where the most beautiful view I’ve seen of the Mississippi is? It’s Vicksburg, MS from the Ramada Inn (though it’s probably called something else now if it’s even still there). The Ramada – not the Mississippi.

Anybody know what the favorite summertime dessert of American men is? According to a radio broadcast in 1930 by Betty Crocker it is FRESH CHERRY COBBLER.
Make one for you husband and it will endear you to him forever (but only if you use Bisquick). And by sending in a Bisquick box top you can get a book of 101 recipes to supply you with suggestions for bringing additional joy to your husband 365 days a year!!!!

Betty Crocker, as I’m sure you know, was not a real person, but her character was so carefully cultivated that she was once voted the second-best-known woman in America (after Eleanor Roosevelt). Of course, Jackie Kennedy and Monica Lewinsky have probably knocked her out of that place by now.
